<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide the method for controlling belt sewing machine which can shorten a time from pressing a loop material against a workpiece by a presser till releasing holding of the loop material and sewing, when sewing the belt loop to a workpiece body by a single needle bar tacking sewing machine and improve working efficiency, and to provide a belt loop sewing machine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: In the method for controlling belt loop sewing machine, a holding means 13 retreats from the movement range of the presser matched with a set bar tacking shape size before bar tacking sewing at one end part of a belt loop whose other end part is sewn to a workpiece body. In the method for controlling belt loop sewing machine, control is made such that either of an X-axis direction retreating method to drive only an X-axis direction moving means XPM or a Y-axis direction retreating means for driving a Y-axis direction moving means YPM earlier than or simultaneously with the driving of the X-axis direction moving means together with the X-axis direction moving means, is selected to drive the X-axis direction moving means and/or the Y-axis direction moving means, the holding means is retreated from the moving range of the presser, and the bar tacking sewing of the other end part of the belt loop is started.
