Carboxylic esters, wherein the ester portion is derived from a <FORM:0956673/C2/1> compound, are prepared by reacting such compound, with oxygen under anhydrous conditions, in a solution also containing dissolved therein (a) a cobalt-carboxylic acid-bromine catalyst (Br:Co being 0.008-1.9 to 1) (b) a carboxylic acid and (c) an alkali or alkaline earth metal carboxylate. The examples describe the preparation of 3-acetoxy-cyclohexene from cyclohexene, alphaacetoxymethylstyrene from alphamethylstyrene, 3-acetoxyoctene-1 from octene-1, benzyl acetate and propionate from toluene, p-methylbenzylacetate from p-xylene and alphamethylbenzylacetate from ethylbenzene. Many other suitable starting materials, including aryl compounds substituted with halogen and/or carboxy radicals and various carboxylic acids are specified. Specification 951,192 and U.S.A.
