PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a fixing unit which is made in a simple configuration but can shorten the start-up time of its fixing component and improve its heat efficiency at fixing, and to provide an image forming apparatus that uses the unit. SOLUTION: This fixing unit has a fixing component 51 which is turnable, a pressure roller 52 which is in pressure contact with the fixing component 51 to form a nip, a heater 53 for heating the fixing component 51, and a driver that turns the fixing component 51. The area which is a part of the fixing component 51 and heated by the heater 53 (and reflector plate 54) is set, excluding the nip and with its upstream end separated from the nip by a predetermined distance in the turning direction at fixing. The driver turns the fixing component 51, in a direction opposite to the fixing direction for raising the temperature of the fixing component 51 at the start of fixing.
