<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retractable instrument, in particular a retractable writing utensil without a cap including an one-piece valve door actuating assembly. <P>SOLUTION: The instrument includes an instrument body having an opening at one end. A valve is mounted within the instrument body, and has an opening at one end. A lid is integrally mounted to the valve and movable with respect to the valve opening by a hinge. An actuating arm is operatively connected to the lid, and the actuating arm transmits forces from an instrument movement mechanism to the valve door under tension and compression.
