PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a correction value within a short period of time and obtain higher accuracy of AF performed by the sensor separate type phase difference detection method. SOLUTION: The image capturing apparatus includes: an image sensor 108 including a group of imaging pixels and a group of focus detection pixels; a first focus information calculating means 202 configured to calculate first focus information indicating a focus state of an imaging optical system based on outputs from the group of focus detection pixels; a photodetector 105 provided separately from the image sensor and configured to photoelectrically convert two images formed by second light fluxes which are two division light fluxes from the imaging optical system; a second focus information calculating means 202 configured to calculate second focus information indicating the focus state of the imaging optical system on the basis of an output from the photodetector; a correction value calculating means 202 configured to calculate a correction value on the basis of the first focus information and the second focus information; and a controlling means 202 configured to perform focus control of the imaging optical system on the basis of the second focus information corrected using the correction value.
