<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a vehicle controller making fuel cut control for a long period of time. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The vehicle controller which controls a vehicle includes: an internal combustion engine; a shift control means, which performs the shift control of an automatic transmission with stages: and a determining means, which, when the rotational speed of the internal combustion engine is a predetermined revolving speed or more, determines whether fuel cut control for stopping the supply of a fuel to the internal combustion engine is carried out. The controller also includes a downshift demand means, which demands downshift to a lower speed stage from the present shift stage, when a driver returns an accelerator. When the downshift is demanded by the downshift demand means (S11-Y) in a state in which no fuel cut control is carried out (S12-N) and then the determining means determines that the fuel cut control is carried out at the present shift stage (S13-Y), the shift control means delays the performance of the demanded downshift (S14) until the fuel cut control is started.
