<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface-treating agent for coated base paper which is capable of obtaining light weight and highly glossy coated base paper, coated paper obtained by using the same and a method for producing the coated paper. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The surface-treating agent for the coated base paper contains (A) a nonionic water soluble polymer selected from a polyvinyl alcohol and cellulose derivative, and (B) a crosslinking agent for the component (A). The coated base paper is provided by being treated with the surface-treating agent, for the coated base paper, at 0.01 to 2.0 g/m<SP>2</SP>per one side based on its dried weight, on at least one side of the paper consisting of pulp as a main component.
