<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an appearance inspection device for wood accurately extracting defects only by an imaging processing to a monochromatic gradation image. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A gradation image photographed by a line sensor camera is input to an image processing device 4. A primary candidate extraction part 11 binarizes the gradation image of the surface of a wood material divided into a plurality of inspection target regions photographed by the line sensor camera, and extracts a primary defect candidate region. A secondary candidate extraction part 12 binarizes the gradation image by a second threshold value set to separate wood grains and defects in a focused inspection target region, and extracts a secondary defect candidate region. A defect extraction part 13 discriminates defects in inspection target regions including the secondary defect candidate region, using a difference between a gradation value of picture elements in the secondary defect candidate region and a gradation value of picture elements around the secondary defect candidate region.
