PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device which has enhanced response speed of an electrochemical display element and easily performs gradation control of an image to be displayed. SOLUTION: The display device includes: a voltage applying means applying voltage to a prescribed electrochemical display element by switching a first voltage and a second voltage whose absolute value is lower than that of the first voltage as writing voltages; a pixel determining means determining an electrochemical display element having a prescribed value or more of density of an image to be displayed; and a voltage application-controlling means dividing the time for applying writing voltage into a first writing period and a second writing period and controlling the voltage applying means in such a manner that the first voltage is applied to the electrochemical display element determined to have the prescribed value or more of density of an image to be displayed by the pixel determining means in the first writing period and the second voltage is applied for a prescribed period according to the density of the image displayed by respective electrochemical display elements in the second writing period.
