<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an antioxidant which inhibits the generation of active oxygen and radicals in vivo, inhibits the production of lipid peroxides, and can thereby prevent and treat aging of skins such as deterioration in the elasticity of the skins, the inflammation of the skins, and the pigmentation of the skins. <P>SOLUTION: There is provided the antioxidant characterized by containing an extract of one or more plants selected from Iris ensata var. ensata, Iris sanguinea Hornem., and Iris laevigata Fisch. as an active ingredient. The antioxidant has an active oxygen-scavenging action and/or a radical-scavenging action, and can be used as a radical scavenger, an active oxygen-scavenger.
