<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To process renderable digital content in a manner that provides a desirable degree of flexible security. <P>SOLUTION: Unauthorized access or duplication of unprotected content is prevented once the content has reached a rendering device, and an architecture is included that allows for general media sources to provide substantially any type of multimedia content to any suitably configured rendering device. Content can be protected and rendered locally and/or across networks, that allows third parties to write components and for the components to be securely and flexibly incorporated into a processing chain. It can be verified by generating one or more authenticators walking through the chain of components that the components are trusted.
