摘要 <P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a direct injection diesel engine achieving low fuel consumption and the reduced amount of soot generated even if the amount of NOx is reduced using an EGR device. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The direct injection diesel engine 100 includes a combustion chamber 10, a recessed portion 20, the EGR device 9, and an ECU 30. The combustion chamber 10 is provided to the top 1a of a piston 1. The recessed portion 20 is provided to the top 1a outward of the combustion chamber 10 independently from the combustion chamber 10. The EGR device 9 recirculates a part of exhaust gas to an intake pipe 101. The ECU 30 selects fuel injection timing with BSFC (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption) minimized according to an operating condition, injects fuel from a fuel injection nozzle N, and sets the EGR rate of the EGR device 9 so that an air excess ratio λ is set between 1.2-1.6.
