PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the size and weight, and to enhance efficiency, in an external combustion engine such as a Stirling engine and a steam engine. SOLUTION: This external combustion engine has a cylinder assembly 4 having a cylinder 2, an output piston 3 freely slidably fitted in the cylinder 2 and a steam heater 7 for heating steam 21. The output piston 3 is pushed out by supplying steam 21 heated by the steam heater 7 in the cylinder 2, and the output piston 3 is pulled back by discharging the steam 21 supplied in the cylinder 2. Heat is taken from the steam 21 in exhaust operation, and a heat regenerator 12 is arranged for imparting the heat to the steam 21 in air supply operation. Thus, a displacer piston is eliminated, and since a dead space in the cylinder 2 is reduced, the external combustion engine 1 can be reduced in the size and weight. Since the steam 21 is always kept at the high temperature by the heat exchange action of the heat regenerator 12, heat efficiency of the external combustion engine 1 can be improved.
