A process for the preparation of 4-(1-hydroxy-1-methylethyl)-2-propyl- imidazole-5-carboxylates (formula I) comprising reaction of 4,4-dimethyl-2-propyl -4,6-dihydroxy-furo[3,4-d]-imidazole (formula II) or its hydrolysates or its ring opening products with alcohol under certain catalytic conditions. Furthermore a process for the preparation of 4,4-dimethyl-2-propyl-4,6-dihydroxy-furo[3,4-d]- imidazole (formula II) with high purity in order to obtain purified compounds of formula I. It ensures the preparation of Olmesartan Medoxomil with high purity. R of compounds of formula I is selected from alkyl with 1-6 carbons.
