<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide: an opening/closing mechanism which requires no special preparation such as changing of setting by an operator, and does not close under its own weight even if an open angle is small, and causes no hindrance on operation; an image reading unit using the same; and an image forming apparatus equipped with the image reading unit. <P>SOLUTION: The opening/closing mechanism supports an opening/closing part arranged on the upper surface of the apparatus body with the rear surface side of the apparatus body as a support point in a way that it is freely rotational and openable/closable relative to the upper surface of an apparatus body. The mechanism includes, on the rear surface side of the apparatus body: a positioning means consisting of a fixed member attached to the apparatus body and a positioning member which is arranged inside the opening/closing part and rotates together with the opening/closing part, for locking an opening/closing operation of the opening/closing part at an arbitrary position; an operation lever for the operating opening/closing of the opening/closing part attached to the front surface side of the opening/closing part; and a link mechanism which causes the positioning member to be interlocked with the operation lever.
