[Also in Division B3] In assembling a washer 22 and a screw 11, the washer is placed on the shank 14 of the screw with an integral neck 26 on the washer surrounding an unthreaded portion 18 of the shank, and the neck is deformed radially inwards until the neck aperture is smaller than the crest-diameter of the screw-threads. The assembly may be heat treated to impart spring characteristics to the washer. The screw-head 12 may be undercut, Fig. 9 (not shown), to facilitate the deforming operation and permit threads to extend further along the shank. |
