In a refrigerated display unit having shelves 22-30 a cold air curtain is projected downwardly in front of the shelves and a warm air curtain is projected upwardly in front of the lower part of the cold curtain. Air is passed by a fan 60 over evaporators 44 and 48 to vertical passages 66-72 each communicating via a vaned opening with a space between adjacent shelves, and to a vertical passage 74 which projects the cold air curtain from a front opening 98. Air from the curtain and from the shelves is drawn by the fan through an opening 62 for recirculation. A heating element 104 gives rise to a convectional air curtain in front of the cold curtain, the air being drawn through a perforated plate 16. Heating elements 50, 52 and 54 are provided for defrosting purposes, defrost water passing through a drain pipe 56. The shelves and the ceiling board 100 are provided on their undersides with electric heating elements, Fig. 6 (not shown), which may be energized continuously or may be switched on only for defrosting. The elements are connected to a supply through flexible leads so that the height of the shelves may be adjustable. Heating elements are also provided at a lip 102 of the front opening 98 and behind price tag mouldings 42a. Roller curtains of sailcloth, glass fibre cloth, or wire screen cloth are located in an upper housing 14 and may be lowered between the cold and hot air curtains.</p> |
