A hydrocarbon stream is liquefied. A refrigerant portion (30b) is drawn from a hydrocarbon feed stream (10). A mixed refrigerant (100) is circulated through a mixed refrigerant circuit (4). At least a part of the refrigerant portion (30c) is added to the mixed refrigerant circuit (4) without fractionation, to change the inventory of the mixed refrigerant (100) in the mixed refrigerant circuit (4). A part of the hydrocarbon feed stream (30a) not comprised in the refrigerant portion of step (b) is cooled and liquefied by heat exchanging against the mixed refrigerant (100) circulating in the mixed refrigerant circuit (4), to provide a liquefied hydrocarbon stream (50).
