<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve transfer efficiency without unnecessary lowering of frame rate. <P>SOLUTION: As the transfer mode for perpendicular transfer of signal charges in a CCD 19, an ordinary transfer mode and an image quality preferential transfer mode assuring an overlap period longer than that in the ordinary transfer mode are prepared. When the setting value of ISO sensitivity is less than the threshold value A, the CCD 19 is driven in the ordinary transfer mode for preferentially maintaining a frame rate, because influence on the quality of pickup image due to deterioration of the transfer efficiency is small. When the setting value of ISO sensitivity is equal to or higher than the threshold value A, transfer efficiency can be improved by driving the CCD 19 in the image quality preferential transfer mode.
