PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a hydraulic shock absorber capable of shortening whole length, while securing stroke length without bringing disadvantage. SOLUTION: The hydraulic shock absorber includes a cylinder 1, a piston 2 which is slidably inserted into the cylinder 1 so as to partition the inside of the cylinder 1 into two operation chambers R1, R2, a rod 3 which is movably inserted into the cylinder 1 and connected to the piston 2, an outer cylinder 4 which covers the cylinder 1 and forms a reservoir R between the cylinder 1 and itself, and an air spring 5 which is interposed between the outer cylinder 4 and the rod 3.
