PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid hunting when focusing a detected subject by detecting a preset subject by using a hybrid AF system that involves a phase difference AF. SOLUTION: The focus adjusting device exerts focusing control selectively using a contrast AF system and a phase difference AF system. The face is detected from an input image supplied by an imaging element (S402). If a face is detected, the contrast AF system is used to drive a focus lens based on the contrast of a partial image showing the detected face (S406). If a face is not detected, the focus lens is driven using the contrast AF system (S403) or phase difference AF system (S405) according to a focusing state obtained based on the contrast of the input image or a phase difference (S404).
