<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a material testing machine preventing the load of a testpiece from becoming zero upon interruption of a test and preventing undesired test force from acting on the testpiece upon resumption of the test. Ž<P>SOLUTION: If a test interrupting order 62 is input when the test is performed by an external signal, the target value of the test force allowed to act on the testpiece is stored. During the interruption of the test, an internal target signal producing circuit 5b is controlled and a switch 55 is opened so that the target value is constant but load is applied to the testpiece. When a test resuming order 63 is input, the internal target signal producing circuit 5b is controlled, and the switch 55 is closed so as to resume the test from the target value upon interruption of the test.
