A method of braking a hydrostatic drive machine (10) includes steps of reducing a displacement of a pump (18) of a hydrostatic drive system (14) to a non-zero displacement, and increasing a displacement of a motor (22) of the hydrostatic drive system (14) to a displacement that is less than a maximum displacement. The method also includes a step of accelerating an engine (20) of the hydrostatic drive system (14) toward a desired engine speed range.
