PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an opening and closing device which can stop the motion of an opening and closing body by detecting an obstacle in the movement path of the opening and closing body, and which can prevent security from being deteriorated by the stop of the motion of the opening and closing body. SOLUTION: This opening and closing device includes: the opening and closing body 10 which makes opening and closing motions along guide rails 21 and 22; obstacle detecting means 41 and 42 for detecting the presence of the obstacle in the movement path of the opening and closing body 10; and a control portion which controls the opening and closing motions of the opening and closing body 10. The control portion stops the opening and closing body 10 when a detection signal is sent out by the obstacle detecting means 41 and 42 during the motion of the opening and closing body 10. After that, the control portion automatically closes the opening and closing body 10 after a lapse of predetermined time in the case of the absence of the detection signal sent out by the obstacle detecting means.
