PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To appropriately detect the focus adjusted state of an optical system even if the position of a trailing target cannot be detected normally. SOLUTION: The focus detecting device includes: a storage means 18 for storing a reference information for a trailing target; an imaging means 16 for repeatedly picking up image information on an imaging face, on which an image is formed by an optical system 1; a position detecting means 9 for detecting the position of the trailing target on the imaging face based on the comparison of the image information on the imaging face with reference information, and outputting a first detection result and a second detection result in succession; a selecting means 9 for selecting at least one focus detecting position from a plurality of focus detecting positions set within the imaging face based on at least the first detection result; and a focus detecting means 10 that detects the focus adjusted state of the optical system relative to the focus detecting position selected by the selecting means.
