PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rubber composition excellent in low-exothermic property and also in wet gripping property, and to provide a pneumatic tire using the rubber composition in a tread. SOLUTION: The rubber composition includes 100 pts.mass of a rubber component, 1-8 pts.mass of a mixture of a zinc salt of an aliphatic carboxylic acid and a zinc salt of an aromatic carboxylic acid, and 10-150 pts.mass of silica, wherein the rubber component contains a styrene-butadiene rubber modified by a compound represented by formula (1), wherein R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP>, and R<SP>3</SP>are the same or different and independently represent alkyl, alkoxy, silyloxy, acetal, carboxyl, mercapto, or a derivative thereof; R<SP>4</SP>and R<SP>5</SP>are the same or different and independently represent H or alkyl; and n represents an integer.
