<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an Mg-containing AlH<SB>3</SB>-based hydrogen storage material by which hydrogen release at normal temperature is sufficiently prevented and a method for producing the material. Ž<P>SOLUTION: The hydrogen storage material has a composition represented by (Al<SB>100-x</SB>Mg<SB>x</SB>)H<SB>3</SB>, where X=5-20 at%, and has a crystal structure same as that of AlH<SB>3</SB>. The method for producing such hydrogen storage material is characterized in that the maximum achieving temperature is limited to 50°C or less upon mechanical alloying for mechanical kneading of AlH<SB>3</SB>and MgH<SB>2</SB>.
