The method involves supplying fuels and an oxidizing agent to a fuel cell i.e. polymer electrolyte diaphragm (PEM) fuel cell, in an operating condition (40), where an electrochemical reaction of the oxidizing agent and the fuels takes place at electrodes of the fuel cell for producing electric voltage. The electric voltage is applied to the fuel cell such that one of the electrodes functions as an anode in the operating condition and as a cathode in a waiting condition, and other electrode functions as the cathode in the operating condition and as the anode in the waiting condition. An independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system with a fuel cell.
