<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projection display device for improving light utilization efficiency without enlarging an optical engine. Ž<P>SOLUTION: A convex lens 40 is disposed between a reflecting polarizing plate 62 and liquid crystal panels 61g, 61r and 61b, thereby making the convex lens 40 function both as a field lens of an illumination system and as a part (rear lens) of a projection optical system. The convex lens 40 can achieve a telecentric characteristic in illumination lights LG, LR and LB, and can collect projection light to suppress dispersion. Thus, the F value of the projection optical system can be set to be small while maintaining the F value of uniformed optical system 30 to be small. Since light beams are collected by the convex lens 40, the aperture of a projection lens body 80 can be made small. Thus, the reflecting polarizing plate 62 can also be made small.
