Packing for a piston or gland comprises a sealing ring 1 of readily deformable material, e.g. rubber, backed on one or both sides by an antiextrusion ring 2 of less deformable material, e.g. rubberized fabric, and a backing ring 3 seating against the outer face of one or each antiextrusion ring and having a wedge-shaped rib 8 adapted to radially expand the associated anti-extrusion ring when the backing ring is subjected to hydraulic pressure on its outer face. As shown in Fig. 1 for a piston packing, an antiextrusion ring 2 is bonded to each side of the ring 1 and has a groove 6 engaged by the rib 8 on the backing ring 3 which may be of nylon, polytetrafluorethylene or a resin bonded fabric and may be freely separable from or bonded to the ring 2 or the rib 8 may be releasably interlocked with the groove 6. Integral axial extensions 9 on the rings 3 provide bearing surfaces for the piston. When applied to a gland the extensions 9 are on the inner periphery of the rings 2 and provide bearing surfaces for the shaft to be sealed. |
