Front and side flaps of the hinged lids of cartons 3 are sealed to the carton walls by indexing the cartons through a passage having pairs of high-frequency electrodes 28-33, one pair in each of the three sides corresponding to the flaps to be sealed and sealing taking place as a flap passes between the electrodes of its respective pair. Photo-electric means 18, 19 is actuated by an accumulation of jammed cartons to stop the machine, is caused by the cartons to switch on the electrodes as they enter, or if cartons are not supplied at given intervals, is actuated by their absence to switch off the electrode current. Each of a pair of walls 22, 23 is pivoted at the base and operated by cam means 40 to cause them to move apart during upward movement of the cartons. In addition, they may move together relative to the third sealing wall 26 to prevent cartons sticking to the latter. The cartons are supplied by a conveyer 1 and raised by latches 14, 15 on reciprocating rods 10 11, the latches passing on either side of the next carton to be raised, on their downward path, Fig. 4. In an alternative arrangement, latches are slid horizontally by rack-and-pinion means (Fig. 10, not shown) operated by fixed stops. Further latches 36, 37 retain the cartons in the passage. |
