<PICT:0965384/C1/1> In the process of the parent case, the diameter of the fibres produced is controlled by controlling the conditions under which the moving gaseous fluid surrounding the tips and the stream of molten material is supplied. The rate of flow, the temperature and the direction of flow of the gaseous fluid are controllable. The gaseous current may be, as shown, flowing with a component parallel to and in the direction of travel of the molten streams, or pipes may be set in the lower walls of the casing with apertures for the gaseous fluid to flow with a component parallel to but in the opposite direction of travel of the molten streams. The fluid may be steam at 150-200 DEG C. or dry nitrogen at 128-215 DEG C. and curves are of diameter of fibre for different rates of flow with the above temperatures, fluids and directions for a glass composition, in percentages by weight, of SiO2 52.31; Al2O3 16.57; Fe2O3 0.42; CaO 17.60; MgO 5.05; Na2O 0.33; K2O 0.11; B2O3 7.70; F traces.
