In a vertical axial flow pump wherein transmission of torque is effected solely by friction between the conical bore 24 of the impeller hub 20 and the taper 25 on the shaft 11, hydraulic means are provided for urging the hub and shaft into loaded engagement of prescribed stress. The assembly comprises a hollow cylinder 15 slidably mounted on the shaft 11 and in abutting relation with the hub 20, a sleeve piston 13 mounted on the shaft and keyed thereto by a split-ring 12 in a shaft groove 27 and a lock-nut 14 screwed on the sleeve 13. The lock nut is screwed along the sleeve until the portion of the shaft 11 between the split-ring 12 and taper 25 is in tension. Hydraulic fluid is applied to the space 23 in the cylinder 15 through a line 26 and pressure is applied to the fluid. The length of shaft 11 between the taper 25 and split ring 12 is subjected to high tension resulting in its elongation. The nut is run down the piston 13 on the required stress being obtained. The nut 14 is set and locked by the cap screw 17 and the fluid pressure is released. |
