A filament-reinforced flexible foil-like web comprises a large-mesh lattice material consisting of artificial or synthetic filaments or threads in which the openings of the lattice have an area of at least 1 sq. mm. and are each closed by a thin skin of an elastomeric material. The term " thin " is defined as meaning that the thickness of the skin at the centre of the meshes is substantially less than the thickness of the supporting lattice material. The lattice material may consist of superimposed unwoven warp and weft threads. The warp threads 1 may consist of vegetable, animal, mineral, artificial or synthetic filaments and the weft threads 2 may be any suitable textile threads e.g. of viscose rayon or glass. The filament or thread spacings (warp and weft) of the lattice material may be at least 1 mm. and preferably 2 to 4 mm. The skin 3 of elastomeric material may consist of natural or artificial rubber, e.g. butyl rubber or butadiene-acrylonitrile or other elastomeric plastic, e.g. polyvinyl chloride, or a mixture thereof, and may be applied as a paste, latex or dispersion. The elastomeric material may contain age resistors, modifiers, e.g. thermosetting resin, curing agents, accelerators, pigments, dyestuffs, flame or water-proofing or preserving agents, and fibre dust or flakes. One side of the web may be provided with an adhesive 8, advantageously a pressure-sensitive adhesive, and the other side may be provided with an adhesiverepelling layer 7, e.g. based on silicone or polyvinyl stearate.</p> |
