[Also in Division B5] In a plunger and die type box-making machine for folding a blank into shape or for inserting a liner in a box, wherein a plunger such as 123, Fig. 5, is carried by a crosshead bar 11 which is reciprocated on a guide column 13, Fig. 4, by a crank linkage, Fig. 1 (not shown), the reciprocating crosshead bar 11 carries a shaft 36 which is oscillated during the reciprocation by an arm 40 thereon having a roller engaging a fixed 8-shaped cam track 42. The oscillating shaft 36 carries an arm 39 which may be used, as is the arm 139 in Fig. 5, to give an increased length of stroke to the plunger 123. Alternatively, in a machine of the type wherein the crosshead bar 11, Fig. 2, reciprocates a main plunger 24 carrying on a spring- retracted stem 28 a separate ejecting plunger 27 for inserting a liner in a box, the stem 28 may be actuated by the arm 39, thus dispensing with the normal impact-actuated lever 35. The cam track 42, Fig. 4, comprises a fixed portion 43 and a portion 45 pivotally mounted at its upper or lower end and biased at the other end by a spring 47, the portion 45 coacting with a switch 48 which operates a signal, or stops the machine, should the full stroke of the plungers be resisted (e.g. by the presence of an extra lining). The yielding cam portion 45 thus prevents damage to the machine. |
