A natural, or synthetic, zeolite is ion-exchanged with a suitable metal ion active to promote electro-chemical reactions (in a fuel cell-see Division H1) and heated to at least 600 DEG C. to destroy its ion-exchange properties without affecting porosity and pore size distribution. Activating ions disclosed are Ag, Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh and in one embodiment, after activation, the zeolite is heated in excess of 350 DEG C. in an oxidizing atmosphere and then further heated in the presence of a lithium salt to introduce Li interstitially into the lattice. |
