The invention relates to a method for determining the location and/or orientation of objects in relation to each other. The invention is based on the use of signals generated by electromagnetic or acoustic transmitters attached to an object and measured by receivers of another object. As a result, the relative location and/or orientation of the objects can be calculated. The invention allows determining amplitude distributions of signals sent by a set of transmitters and received by a set of receivers in a more precise and effective manner than prior art. The invention further allows choosing the signals to be transmitted more freely than prior art, especially in terms of frequency and phase since the signals to be transmitted do not have to be orthogonal with each other, unlike in prior art.
