Embodiments of the present invention pertain to a drop hammer (100) comprising a load (172), an actuator (116) connected to the load (172), and a fluid circuit (132) that is connected to the actuator (116) and is connectable to a fluid source (580), such as a source of hydraulic power. The fluid circuit (132) is operable with differential pressure to displace the load (172) . The fluid circuit (132) includes a slow-release device (503) for releasing differential pressure, thereby slowly displacing the load (172) as a function of flow from the fluid source (580). Embodiments of the present invention also pertain to a drop hammer (100) comprising a frame (106), a selectively actuated rotatable sprocket (122) mounted on the frame (106), a hammer implement (172), and at least one chain (101) engaged by the sprocket (122). The chain (101) includes two-pitch link (102) that includes a catch (150) between two pitched wings (412, 414), the catch (150) being configured for engaging the hammer implement (172), enabling the first chain (101) to displace the hammer implement (172). Other embodiments pertain to a drop hammer (100) that includes a frame (106) and a selectively actuated hammer implement (172) displaceably mounted on the frame (106) . The hammer implement (172) includes a collar (113) surrounding an impact tool (104).
