Olefinic copolymers and process for their preparation

Linear high molecular weight unsaturated copolymers of a non-conjugated mono-cyclic polyene or alkyl polyene with ethylene or a higher a -olefin are characterized by a polymeric chain made up of single polyene units separated by olefin units. The polyene and olefin mixture are polymerized by a halogen-containing catalyst prepared from a vanadium compound and an organometallic compound of a metal of Group I, II and III or a complex organometallic compound of metals of Group I and III. Polymerization is carried out in solution or preferably in bulk as a solution of the polyene in the olefin kept liquid. The proportion of monomeric olefin to polyene is preferably kept constant. The products are sulphur-vulcanizable.
