The invention relates to hexacyanobenzene and a process for preparing the same by reacting tricyanomesitylene with alkyl nitrite, e.g. ethyl nitrite and a dehydrating reagent, e.g. thionyl chloride to produce pentacyano toluene and treating the latter consecutively with alkyl nitrite, e.g. ethyl nitrite and a dehydrating agent, e.g. thionyl chloride. The tricyanomesitylene starting material may be prepared refluxing tribromomesitylene with cuprous cyanide in dimethyl formamide and then adding to hot hydrochloric solution of ferric chloride when the tricyanomesitylene separated on cooling. |
