The method involves correcting an estimated value of capacity i.e. reid vapor pressure capacity, to vaporize the fuel in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle using a multiplicative operator (25) and a summer (35), according to richness coefficient of burned fuel and air mixture determined by a richness regulation unit. The engine speed evolution during the cold-starting of the engine is compared with respect to the reference engine speed evolution using an estimating unit. The correction of the estimated value is authorized if the richness coefficient is beyond value ranges. The value ranges are the function of the temperature of the engine.
