The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for recognizing traffic signs, in which at least one significant feature for a traffic sign is ascertained which is standardized for a region. The region corresponding to the ascertained feature is determined. At least one classification feature and/or at least one classification method is stipulated on the basis of the determined region for the purpose of recognizing the and/or at least one further traffic sign. The traffic sign and/or the at least one further traffic sign is/are recognized using the stipulated classification feature and/or the stipulated classification method.
