An HGW mobile device (20) is capable of performing data communication using a plurality of wireless communication systems of different theoretical maximum communication rate, specifically, a mobile wireless communication system and a wireless LAN communication system. The HGW mobile device (20) is equipped with a mobile wireless communication unit (210) and a wireless LAN communication unit (250) and can thus relay data transfer between an external network (10) and a client terminal (30). Furthermore, a communication rate initial setting unit (230) sets a value in accordance with the theoretical maximum communication rate of the wireless communication system of slowest theoretical maximum communication rate, i.e. the mobile wireless communication system, as the initial communication rate when the wireless LAN communication unit (250) initially commences wireless LAN communication using the client terminal (30) and the wireless LAN communication system.
