980, 487. Measuring angular displacement electrically. SPERRY RAND CORPORATION. April 14, 1961 [May 31, 1960], No. 13485/61. Heading G1N. [Also in Diyisions H1 and H2] A double differential transformer pick-off for measuring angular displacement comprises A.C. energized primary windings 36, 37 (Fig. 3) wound on diametrically opposite halves of a magnetic armature 35, facing flat secondary windings 60, 61 and 62, 63 respectively connected in series opposition , whereby an output signal from the secondary windings indicates by its magnitude and phase sense the extent and direction of rotation of the armature 35 with respect to the secondary windings. The pick-off is associated with a gyroscope 11 (Fig. 4) to measure its precession about an axis 14 common to the gyro and the pick-off 30 due to rotation of the gyro housing about an axis perpendicular to both 14 and the spin axis. The armature 35 is fixed to an end cap 20 of the casing containing the apparatus, and the rotor 32 carrying the secondary windings 60-63 is fixed to the gyro housing. The rotor 32 also carries torquer coils 47, 48 which co-act with permanent magnets 38, 39 on armature 35 when energized with D.C. to line up the pick-off windings in the neutral position. |
