In a machine for forming pellets of hay such as is described and claimed in Specification 939,759, at least one wall of each of the dies is hinged to provide a die of selectively variable taper. The dies have thin partitions 53, Fig. 5, with sharp inner edges 54 and partitions 55 having portions 58, Fig, 7, movable about pins 56 in response to the air or other fluid pressure in diaphragm members 59 supplied from a common outer ring (not shown). Alternatively, the moveable partitions are actuated by cams 90, Fig. 6, operated by a lever 91 against a spring 92. The helical conveyer which feeds the hay in a thoroughly lacerated and shredded condition to the compacting rollers 43, has pitched endflanges 40, Fig. 5. The pellets produced are broken off at any desired length on adjustable impact elements 52. A spraying unit (not shown) may be provided above the hopper 34 for supplying moisture to the hay to be pressed; this forms the subjectmatter of Specification 980,080.
