A nail staple, Fig. 1, e.g. cut from a coil of filament, is made of nylon or polypropylene with two parallel wire reinforcement cores 14a, 15a which may be of steel or non-ferrous metal and joined by a straight or curved web 22, Fig. 6, or may be of rectangular section, Fig. 16 (not shown). The staple may be of rectangular section with rounded corners as shown or have an oval or circular section, Figs. 7, 17 (not shown). The points of the staple, instead of being of the opposed chisel forms (shown in Fig. 1) to induce lateral spread on insertion, Figs. 8, 10 (not shown), may have the two oblique chisel faces 13a facing away from each other as indicated in Fig. 14 or be formed to a V with opposed oblique faces at each point, Fig. 15 (not shown). Staples may be joined together to form a stick, Figs. 11-13 (not shown) by an adhesive coating or by bonding adjacent surfaces together, the staples being formed by bending before or after joining. A tool for driving the staple may have a central ridge, Fig. 10 (not shown), for depressing the synthetic resin between the wire cores 14, 15 in the bridge portion 12 to spread the bridge and increase the grip. The resin may also be heat sealed to the material, e.g. textile, being fastened.
