A target is detected by applying time-reversed waves of forward scattered waves from the target. A target detection device comprises a sound source for sending sonic pulses, a transducer array disposed in a region in which forward scattered waves from an object in a propagation environment are received, addition processing units respectively for extracting only the signals of the forward scattered waves by vector-adding reference signals in a reference sound field which are received by the transducer array in a state in which an obstacle is present in the propagation environment and mixed signals in a mixed sound field which are received by the transducer array in a state in which in addition to the obstacle, the target is present in the propagation environment, a phase conjugation determination unit for receiving the extracted signals of the forward scattered waves and checking whether phase conjugacy is achieved in the propagation environment from the sound source to the transducer array by applying passive phase conjugation to the determination in the reference sound field, and a time reversal processing unit for generating time-reversed time-reversed signals by subjecting the forward scattered waves to time reversal processing on condition that the phase conjugation determination unit determines that the phase conjugacy is achieved.
