The invention relates to a method for producing alcohols or mixtures thereof, wherein a hydroformylation mixture containing aldehyde in a first reaction zone is brought into contact with a sulfide-free, metal-containing catalyst in order to hydrate at least part of the aldehyde contained in the hydroformylation mixture into alcohol, and thus create an at least partially hydrated stream, and introduce the stream obtained from the first reaction step, the stream still containing aldehyde, into at least one second reaction zone, bring it into contact with a sulfide-free, metal-containing catalyst in order to hydrate a further part of the aldehyde contained in the stream into alcohol, wherein the carrier and catalyst are different in the first and second contact zones, and to separate the alcohol from the reaction.
