The present invention relates to a novel compound having a superior antioxidant activity, isolated from Ramalina terebrata. More particularly, the present invention relates to a novel compound RAMALIN having a superior antioxidant activity, isolated from Ramalina terebrata which is a lichen found in the Antarctic region, to a method for producing RAMALIN, to pharmaceutical compositions containing RAMALIN as an active ingredient, to functional foods, and to functional cosmetics. RAMALIN, according to the present invention, has superior antioxidant effects than conventional antioxidants currently available on the market, and therefore RAMALIN can be widely used in remedies for oxidation-related diseases, functional foods for anti-aging, and functional cosmetics for whitening the skin and diminishing wrinkles, etc.
