Implantable medical devices and methods for local treatment of cardiovascular diseases are disclosed. The devices and methods utilize peptides capable of chemoattracting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), of promoting angiogenesis and/or of inhibiting apoptosis, which are locally administered to a bodily site afflicted by the cardiovascular disease. The peptides can be deposited on a surface of an implantable medical device configured for treating the cardiovascular disease and/or can be locally administered to a desired bodily site by means of an implantable medical device configured for treating the cardiovascular disease.
